What is BIM?

BIM is an acronym for Building Information Modelling, or Building Information Model. It is the creation and use of coordinated information about a building project / assett used for design decision making, production of high quality construction documents, predicting performance, cost estimation and construction planning. BIM is a model based technology linked with a database of project information to enable seamless communication between all stakeholders associated with the construction process.

BIM is changing the construction industry and the way in which it works by virtual construction of the project even before moving to the construction site. Building information modelling technology is used for the entire building life cycle, including the facility operation and maintenance.

“A digital representation of physical and functional characteristics of a facility… and a shared knowledge resource for information about a facility forming a reliable basis for decisions during its life-cycle; defined as existing from earliest conception to demolition.” - National Institute of Building, United States
