Rockingham Race Report

May 3, 2018

BRITISH GT4 CHAMPIONSHIP

ROUND 2 – RACE 3

Last weekend saw the Invictus Games Racing Team head for Rockingham Raceway for the third race in the British GT Championship.    Practice and Qualifying took place on the Saturday in weather more reminiscent of the end of November rather than the end of April.   We continue to progress well with familiarising ourselves with the new Jaguar GT Car and, as ever, much was learned over the two days.  A wet qualifying race saw us experience some difficulties resulting in a low grid placing for the two hour race planned for the Sunday but improvements in performance in other areas was pleasing.

Race day dawned dry but bitterly cold with everyone huddling in the garages and restaurants to keep warm.  A few warm up laps had us ready to go and the pit lane walk and signing began.  It was really good to see so many people turn up and its always great to talk to the children – the future of the sport who love collecting their photographs, posters and signatures.

Just after 1pm and we were off for Car #44’s first two hour long race.  My co-driver, Steve McCulley drove a good first leg and the car performed well in a very busy race.  One hour later and I took over the seat.  I had an interesting drive with some good battles with other drivers in well-established cars against whom we were well matched which was very pleasing indeed.  I managed to make up some six places and we were pleased with the overall performance of the car.

As always it was great to see Andy and Emma from James and Ward Ltd who had come along to support.  I am hoping to meet other members of the company staff at future races.  You will be very welcome.

The next race with the Invictus team is at Snetterton in Norfolk on the last weekend in May but before that I am off to the South of France to race in the European GT4 series with Super Racing in their Aston Martin.  The race takes place around the streets of Pau so it is very challenging but massively exciting.  As you can imagine I am hoping for better weather!

I will let you know how I get on ……..
